A Family’s Journey Through Childhood Cancer

Long after their children were grown and out of the house, Emily Schlund and her husband Jerry opened their home and their hearts and established permanent guardianship of their great-nephew, Anthony. Their new and old families blended together and all was well until Anthony turned five and was diagnosed with leukemia.

The ensuing journey of all things related to cancer made them grow and connect in ways they never imagined. They became immediate advocates for each other and their child. They watched as Anthony gained an understanding and a voice to communicate his needs and desires.

Their need to navigate medical information - feeling out of control as well as witnessing and enduring pain - deepened their family’s bond and opened them to a new world of connections, celebrations and healing in many forms.
